The 5 days Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – Mgahinga Gorilla National Park safari is an exciting expedition to the only two national parks in Uganda where mountain gorillas can be encountered. This Uganda gorillas safari offers you the opportunity to embark on gorilla trekking excursions as well as a habituation experience. Bwindi alone has about 12 habituated families available for trekking. These families include; Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura, found in Buhoma region, Nkuringo and Bushaho found in Nkuringo region, Ruhija, Bitukura, and Kyaguriro, found in Ruhija region, Mishaya, Nshongi, Kahungye, and Busingye, found in Rushaga region. And Mgahinga has one family available for trekking – Nyakagezi family.
Besides the mountain gorilla population, the parks are a habitat to other wildlife, mammal and bird species. The two parks have an innumerable number of attractions to guarantee an adventurous safari experience. Situated in the South-western Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is part of the vast Bwindi Impenetrable rainforest and is a habitat to over 220 tree species, 120 mammal species, 348 species of birds, and 220 species of butterflies. Mgahinga on the other hand is situated in Kisoro district, amidst the Virunga mountains and in the Albertine rift montane forests ecoregion. Besides mountain gorillas, the park is a habitat to the rare golden monkeys, among other primate and mammal species. Being on a Uganda gorillas safari, you will have the liberty to indulge in every possible encounter with the gorillas. At an extra cost, you can do a gorilla habituation experience instead of or after the regular gorilla trekking excursion. The experience lasts an entire day and while on it you get the chance to have a close up with a gorilla family being habituated. You are part of the researchers and professional team working tooth and nail to get the creatures adopted to their environment and get used to the presence of human beings.
Your 5 days Bwindi Impenetrable National Park– Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda gorillas safari will start with an English-speaking driver who doubles as your guide picking you from a suitable location within Kampala. You will then embark on a drive to the prized Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – the home of the Uganda gorillas. Your experienced guide will take the Kampala – Ntungamo – Rukungiri – kihihi – Buhoma route. This is regarded as the quickest and most direct route to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
You will make a brief stop at the equator in Kayabwe, about 72 km from Kampala city. While at the equator, you will have a chance to see the imaginary line that divides the world into two equal halves. You can choose to stand at this point with one of your feet in the northern hemisphere and the other foot in the southern hemisphere. Besides taking photos at the equator, you also have the opportunity to visit the souvenir shops in the area where you can buy any articles of your choice to keep as a reminder of your memorable safari to Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.
You will make your next stop in Ntungamo town where you will have a savory lunch at one of the best restaurants. Continuing with your journey, you will pass through Queen Elizabeth National Park’s famous Ishasha region – the home of the tree climbing lions. You will have a glimpse of the noteworthy lions as your guide drives via Kihihi to Buhoma. You will then arrive at Buhoma, one of the four main gorilla trekking regions in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. In the evening, you can embark on a nature walk before retiring to your choice accommodation for dinner and overnight.
On the second day of your Uganda gorillas safari, you will have an early breakfast and then head out to the park headquarters at around 7:00 am. You will be briefed about the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ while on a gorilla trekking excursion. You will then hit the trails with a team of professional guides and trackers. A typical gorilla trekking excursion lasts between 2 – 8 hours. Hiking through the beaten trails in search of the potent giants is exerting but greatly rewarding. The hours you spend searching through the vast forest are not boring; you get to encounter a variety of mammal, primate and bird species as well as noteworthy floral and plant life.
Once you encounter a gorilla family, you will spend an hour observing its members; how the domineering male silver-back (head of the family) displays his authority and ability. He huffs, grunts, roars and walks about his territory with an air of authority. Besides other males, you will also see the caring mothers tending to their little ones; feeding some, rubbing a few, carrying others and keeping a watchful eye on those playing in the trees. You will be allowed to take photos and recordings of the experience.
You can have your packed lunch before or after your gorilla trekking expedition. As the afternoon wanes, you will embark on the ‘Batwa trail experience’. This includes visiting the community where the Batwa – native forest dwellers live. You will observe and get a chance to engage in their daily routine; brewing local beers, preparing medicinal herbs, cooking the evening meals, as well as their song and dance performances. Your day’s Uganda gorillas excursion will end when you choose to retire to your lodge.
After having breakfast, you will embark on a transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The park is located in Kisoro district in the far South-western Uganda. Mgahinga lies amidst the Virunga Mountains and the Albertine rift montane forests eco region. Besides Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only other place in Uganda where mountain gorillas can be trekked. A Uganda gorillas safari excursion is incomplete without visiting Mgahinga.
When you arrive at Mgahinga, you will have lunch and then go for a golden monkey tracking excursion. Though it is Uganda’s smallest National Park, Mgahinga is endowed with an innumerable number of wildlife species including various primate and bird species. After tracking the golden monkeys, you will retire for dinner and overnight at your choice accommodation. This will mark the end of the day’s Uganda gorillas expedition.
After having breakfast, you will report at the park headquarters to have a briefing before you can embark on your final Uganda gorillas trekking excursion. You will be briefed concerning the gorilla trekking etiquette; you are for instance not allowed to smoke or take photos using a flash light while in the presence of gorillas. After the briefing, you will hit one of the trail heads with a team of professional guides and trackers. A typical gorilla trekking excursion lasts between 2 – 8 hours. Your drive back will not be a boring one, you will enjoy the spectacular view of the massive greenery spread across an expanse of rolling hills, the cattle grazing, as well as the locals tending to their daily routines – you will enjoy the splendid view of a typical countryside life.
Once you arrive in Kampala, your guide will drop you at a location of your choice. If you have a flight to catch, your guide will drive you to Entebbe airport on time. This will mark the end of your splendid 5 days Bwindi – Mgahinga Uganda gorillas safari expedition.
