Your 9 days Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari starts when a guide picks you from a suitable location in Kampala at 7:00 am. As you drive towards the South-western Uganda, you will make a brief stop at the equator for you to take photographs at the monuments, stand in the Southern and Northern hemispheres at the same, and also do a few experiments that prove the equator is at that place. After visiting the souvenir shops, you will continue with your journey to Uganda’s prized Mountain Rwenzori. Your next stop will be in Mbarara town where you will have lunch at one of the best hotels/restaurants. As you drive on, you will be amazed at the massive greenery, rolling hills, tea plantations and banana farms that cover this part of the country. You will reach the region of the Rwenzori in the evening. You will retire to your choice accommodation for dinner and overnight, preparing to begin your Mountain Rwenzori trekking excursion the next day.
The second day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari will begin with you reporting at the headquarters of Rwenzori Mountain National Park for a briefing and hiring of relevant equipment before hitting the trails. You will begin from Nyakalengija and follow the trail through plantations and the humble homesteads of the Bakonjo – the mountain dwellers. The trail will have you cross the Mahoma River, arriving at Nyabitaba hut, which is about 2.652m up Rwenzori Mountain. The hike lasts between 5 – 6 hours. From this location, you will enjoy the scenic view of the portal peaks and Mount Kyniangoma. The Rwenzori Turaco, monkeys and the chimpanzees are the most common habitats in this area. The second day of your Rwenzori Mountain trekking safari will end as you retire to bed after dinner.
On the third day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari you will descend the ridge to Mukubu River and then climb through a bamboo forest towards John Matte hut – 3380m. Your afternoon will involve climbing and hopping through a boulder, ascending via the north side of Bukuju River through a giant heather forest. This hike will last between 5-6 hours. You have dinner and spend the night at John Matte hut.
The fourth day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour will have you trekking from John Matte hut (3380 m) to Bujuku hut (3977 m). Along the way, you will encounter a series of bogs which are the most common feature in this part of the mountain. You will traverse via Bigo bog and Lake Bujuku. Also, in this part of Mountain Rwenzori is the mythical ‘everlasting flower’ which is said to remain on the plant for about 40 years. You will spend the night at Bujuku hut.
On the fifth day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour, you will leave Bukuju hut and climb through moss-covered groundsel greenery, proceeding to Scott Eliot pass (4.372 m) between mountains Baker and Stanley. When you reach this point, you will proceed to Elena hut (4.540 m) for the night. You will sleep preparing to ascend to Mount Stanley the next day.
You will depart from Elena hut in the early morning and embark on a hike to the Stanley plateau. As you cross this in the North-western direction, you will follow the Margherita glacier to the summit, which is a 3 hours hike. You will then descend, via Elena hut proceeding to upper Kitandara lake and passing through the mass of thick mad to lower Kitandara lake, halting at Kitandara hut. From this point, you will proceed to climb Mount Baker or Mount Louig do Savoia and to the peak – Vittorio sella. A Mountain Rwenzori trekking tour is the ultimate safari adventure for the avid sightseer.
The seventh day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari will have you proceeding from Lake Kitandara and ascending to the Freshfield pass (4.282m). You will then hike along a ridge of high alpine mossy glades, before descending from the circuit amidst rocks and bogs. At this point you will enjoy the breath-taking panorama of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker and Mount of Savoy. At this point you will embark on a soggy trail leading to Bujongolo, Akendahi and Kabamba rock shelters. This is where the Kabamba valley starts, leading you to Guy Yeoman hut (3.261m). This hike can last upto 6 hours. This region of Mountain Rwenzori lies amidst mountains, rivers and beautiful greenery.
The eighth day of your Mountain Rwenzori will see you leaving Guy Yeoman hut hiking towards Nyabitaba hut. To get to Nyabitaba hut, you will have to descend along Mubuku River, past Kichuchu, a rock shelter, then joining the original route, down to Bujuku River. This hike is about that last 2-3 hours. You will spend the night at Nyabitaba hut.
On the last day of your Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari, you will leave Nyabitaba hut in the morning, descending steeply off the ridge through the lush vegetation to the base of the mountain. You will proceed to the park headquarters where you will hand in any equipment you hired. You will then embark on your journey back to Kampala, arriving in the late evening. This will mark the end of your 9 days Mountain Rwenzori trekking safari.
