Itinerary

Day 1Birding in Mabamba bay – tour Kampala city

Your 14 days mind-blowing Uganda safaris tour will begin when a guide picks you from a suitable location in Kampala. After a briefing on how your trip will go, you will embark on a drive to Mabamba bay for a birding excursion. Mabamba bay is a wetland is situated on the edge of Lake Victoria, northwest of the Entebbe peninsula. You will see bird species like; the shoebill stork, blue swallow, papyrus gonolek, yellow warbler, kingfisher, lap wines, herons and egrets.

After the birding excursion, you will continue your Uganda safaris excursion with a tour of Kampala city. You will visit the capital’s most notable attractions – the Uganda Museum, Kasubi tombs, Kabaka’s palace, Rubaga Hill, Baha’I temple, Gadaffi Mosque and the Namugongo Martyrs’ shrine. Day 2Transfer to Jinja – Visit the source of the Nile – explore Jinja town

On the second day of your mind-blowing Uganda safaris tour, you will embark on transfer to Jinja after having breakfast. Jinja is situated in the Eastern Uganda and is Uganda’s second-largest industrial capital. You will pass through the eminent Mabira forest and make your first stop in Jinja town for a lunch break. You will then head out to explore the source of the world’s longest river – the legendary river Nile. Besides boat riding, there are many safari activities to engage in while at the Nile; you can go bungee jumping, kayaking, white water rafting, horseback riding, quad biking and visiting the Itanda falls.

After the excursions at the Nile, you will embark on a Jinja town tour. Jinja town was once regarded as Uganda’s most thriving industrial capital. The town had been predominantly occupied by the Asians who set up and ran massive business and industrial ventures until their expulsion from Uganda in 1979 by Idi Amin, the then reigning president of the republic of Uganda. When the Asians left, the businesses which had then been transferred to the management of the inexperienced natives collapsed and the town lost it’s glory. Left behind is the old colonial – Asian architecture, the mild traces of the once vibrant industrial community and booming business capital. You will be able to visit the curio shops and crafts centers where you can purchase souvenirs to take home – a reminder of your visit to Eastern Uganda. As the night sets in, your day’s Uganda safaris adventures will end when you retire to a comfortable lodging for dinner and overnight.

Day 3Transfer to Kapchorwa – explore the Sipi falls en route

After having breakfast, your Uganda safaris adventure will continue as you embark on a drive to Kapchorwa district located in the far Eastern region of the country. You will visit Kapchwora’s most outstanding tourist attraction – the Sipi falls, situated on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan boarder. The Sipi falls are a series of 3 waterfalls and are a starting point for many hikes up Mount Elgon.

Later in the early evening, you will embark on a community tour. The area around Sipi is a home to the Gishu people – a tribe of indigenous coffee growers. You will tour the coffee plantations and the guides will share with you amusing facts on how coffee is grown, processed and roasted. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the locals and see how they go through the daily routine of living – they make the most out of life with the little they have. Your day’s Uganda safaris adventure will end when your guide takes you to your choice lodging.

Day 4Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park – explore the Nyero rock painting en route

After having breakfast, your Uganda safaris excursion will continue as you embark on a drive to Uganda’s celebrated Kidepo Valley National Park situated in Karamoja region in the North-eastern Uganda. On your way to the park, you will make a brief stop in Kumi district to explore the famous Nyero rock paintings. These peculiar paintings date back to the stoneage and are believed to have been in existence before 1250 CE. The intriguing art work is arched in a three-tiered rock shelter. After exploring the shelter, you will continue your drive to Kipedo, enjoying the breath-taking beauty of a rustic countryside. Although it is Uganda’s most remote national park, Kidepo Valley ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses. It is a habitat to an innumerable number of mammals and wildlife species. When you arrive at the park, you will check in at your choice lodging for the night. Kidepo is a major Uganda safaris destinations.

Day 5Game drive in Narus Valley – encounter the native Karamojong people

You will begin your day’s Uganda safaris adventure with an early breakfast before heading out for a game drive in the park’s famous Narus valley. The valley attracts a high concentration of wildlife because of its water sources. A guided game drive through this prized area is your chance to see the; bat-eared Fox, aardwolf, striped hyena, caracal, klipspringer, cheetah, hunting dog, greater and lesser duku, among other carnivores species unique to Kidepo. Day 6Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – drive to the top of the falls

Your day’s Uganda safaris activities will begin with a nice breakfast, after which you will depart from Kidepo and drive to Murchison Falls National Park – Uganda’s largest national park and the location of the prized Murchison Falls. The park is located in North-western Uganda and is a habitat to over 76 mammal species and 450 bird species. Once there, your guide will drive you to the top of falls. You will see the breath-taking sight of the surging waters squeezing through the rocks and pressing through an 8 meter gorge, before plunging into the great depths below. You can later embark on a guided nature walk before retiring to your accommodation to unwind, enjoy dinner and have a good night’s rest to be fit for the next day’s fun-filled Uganda safaris adventures.

Day 7Game drive in the park – boat cruise along the Victoria Nile

Your day’s Uganda safaris excursions in Murchison Falls National Park will begin with a game drive at 6:30 am, after having a light breakfast. Depending on the location of your lodging, you will embark on a game drive in one of the park’s famous game viewing tracks; the Albert track, Buligi track or the Victoria track. Also, the area around Nyamsika gorge and its cliffs has a high concentration of game. You will see various animals including four of the big fives; lions, elephants, leopards, and the cape buffaloes. A safari game drive in Murchison falls is also your chance to spot; the Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribis, grey duikers, Bush bucks, among other wildlife that make their abode in the park.

After having lunch, you will continue your Uganda safaris adventure with a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile. The sight and sound of the gushing and rushing waterfalls is soothing and breath-taking. As you sail upstream to the bottom of the falls, you will spot herds of hippos and crocodiles along the river banks. The boat cruise is also the ideal adventure for the avid birder. Day 8Birding and guided nature walks in Murchison Falls National Park

The day’s Uganda safaris experiences will include birding and nature walks through the park. Places to be explored include trails through Kaniyo Pabidi and Rabongo forests, the area around the Nille, the Lake Albert delta, Mubako junction, the Southern and Northern banks along the Nile, Nyamusika cliffs, the various thickets and woodlands. While trailing through these areas, you will see many primate and bird species. You will spot a variety of water birds, savannah forest birds, and Albertine rift endemics. The species you will see include; flycatchers, woodpeckers, cuckoos, herons, hornbills, bee-eaters, Secretary birds, black-bellied bustards and Marabou storks.

After the excursion, you will report back to your lodging, have lunch and then embark on a drive to Kibale National Park – the ideal safari getaway for the primate lover. Kibale has about 13 primate species, including a population of about 1450 individual chimpanzees. Once you arrive at Kibale, you will check in at your choice accommodation for the night. Day 9Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park – guided nature walk in Bigodi wetland sanctuary

Your day’s Uganda safari excursions in Kibale will begin with the park’s major highlight – chimpanzee trekking. After having breakfast, you will head out to Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing from the park authorities after which you will be allocated a chimp community to track. Chimpanzees live in large communities of about 100 individuals, and a typical tracking experience lasts between 2-6 hours. You will have the opportunity to watch the chimps go about their daily routine; feeding, patrolling, hunting, copulating, as well as playing and breastfeeding for the little ones. Kibale National Park has the highest concentration of chimp population in Uganda.

After your chimpanzee tracking experience, you will go for a guided nature walk in Bigodi wetland sanctuary in the late afternoon. The swamp is a habitat to over 200 bird species, and a variety of primate and mammal species including; the various kinds of monkeys, otters, bush pigs, bushbucks, sitatungas, and mongooses. You will spend the entire evening enjoying Kibale’s bountiful wildlife, bird species and plant life. You will drive back to your lodge in time for dinner. The park has everything in place to guarantee an unforgettable Uganda safaris experience.

Day 10Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park – visit the Katwe salt lakes region en route

After having breakfast, you will depart from Kibale and drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park to encounter another series of awaiting Uganda safaris adventures. On your way, you will make a brief stop in the crater lakes region – a mass of 10 lakes formed as a result of violent volcanic explosions. You will specifically explore the famous Katwe crater lake – Uganda’s largest salt mine. The salt miners extract 3 main products; blocks of rock salt, high quality salt crystals that are normally sold as table salt and salty mud which is commonly used as salt licks for cattle. After exploring the lake, you will proceed to Queen Elizabeth and arrive there in the early evening. You can then check in at an accommodation of your choice, take some time to relax and then embark on a nocturnal game drive as the night sets in. A nocturnal game drive is your chance to sight elusive creatures like; leopards, hyenas, civets, genets, bush babies, porcupines and night jars.

Day 11Game drive in Kasenyi plains – boat cruise on Kazinga channel

Your day’s Uganda safaris excursion will begin with a game drive at 6:30 am after an early breakfast. You will head out to the renowned Kasenyi plains with an experienced game ranger. The plains are a mass of African Savannah known for harboring the largest concentration of game as compared to any other section in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Besides being a habitat to big game and predators, the plains harbor various species of wetland birds.

You will head back to your lodge in the early afternoon to have lunch and a brief rest before going for a boat cruise on Kazinga channel. The launch cruise along the channel is one of the most popular Uganda safaris activities in Queen Elizabeth National Park. You get to sit back and enjoy the sight of elephants, buffalo, bush bucks, kobs and large herds of hippos on the riverbanks. Occasionally, visitors are able to spot leopards, lions and forest hogs. Besides the various mammals, the channel is a habitat for various species of water birds. After the boat cruise, you can embark on a nature walk before returning to your lodge for the night.

Day 12Game drive in Ishasha region – transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your day’s Uganda safaris adventure will begin with a game drive in Ishasha region. Ishasha is situated in the Southern part of the park and the region is most known for its resident tree-climbing lions. As your guide drives through the region, you will spot the notorious lions languidly stretched out in the tree branches. The region is dominated by acacia woodlands, scrubland and riparian forest at the banks of the meandering Ishasha river. The wildlife animals in Queen Elizabeth include the various antelope species; kobs, Bushbucks and topis. Hippos, buffaloes, chimps, monkeys and elephants are some of the other animals you will see.

After having lunch, you will embark on a transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – the home of almost half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Once you arrive at the park, you will check in at your desired accommodation and retire to an early dinner and overnight. You can however choose to embark on a guided nature walk in the park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a great Uganda safaris destination.

Day 13Gorilla trekking excursion in Bwindi Impenetrable forest – Batwa trail experience

A Uganda safari trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is incomplete without a gorilla trekking excursion. After having breakfast, you will report at the park headquarters at around 7:30 am. You will be briefed about the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ while on a gorilla trekking excursion. You will then hit the trails with a team of professional guides and trackers. A typical gorilla trekking excursion lasts between 2 – 8 hours. Hiking through the beaten trails in search of the potent giants is exerting but greatly rewarding. The hours you spend searching through the vast forest are not boring; you get to encounter a variety of mammal, primate and bird species as well as noteworthy floral and plant life.

Once you encounter a gorilla family, you will spend an hour observing its members; how the domineering male silver-back (head of the family) displays his authority and ability. He huffs, grunts, roars and walks about his territory with an air of authority. Besides the males, you will also see the fascinating females – caring mothers tending their little ones; feeding some, rubbing a few, carrying others and keeping a watchful eye on those playing in the trees. You will be allowed to take photos and recordings of the experience. Bwindi harbors more than half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi is the place to go for a satiating Uganda safari experience.

After the gorilla trekking expedition, you will have lunch and then embark on a Batwa trail experience. The excursion includes visiting the community where the Batwa – native forest dwellers live. You will observe and get a chance to engage in their daily routine; brewing local beers, preparing medicinal herbs, cooking the evening meals, as well as their song and dance performances. After the experience, you will embark on a drive to Lake Mburo National Park.

Day 14Boat cruise on Lake Mburo – return to Kampala – end of safari

Your day’s Uganda safaris adventure will begin with an early breakfast before embarking on a boat cruise along Lake Mburo. As you sail on the lake, you will spot; herds of hippos, buffaloes, and crocodiles at the banks. The area around the lake is also a habitat to many bird species including the rare shoe bill stork. The other birds to see during this Uganda safaris adventure include; the red, yellow and black papyrus gonaleks, African fishing eagle, African finfoot, Abyssinian ground horn bill, saddle billed stork, red-faced barbet, grey-crowned crane, papyrus yellow warbler, and the brown-chested wattled plover.
