Lake Bunyonyi translated ‘place of many little birds’ in the native dialect is situated in the South-western region between the districts of Kisoro and Kabale, close to Uganda’s border with Rwanda. The lake is believed to be one of the deepest lakes in Africa. Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s celebrated tourist attractions; it appears on the 5000 shilling note with the title ‘Lake Bunyonyi and terraces’. The one day lake safari is your chance to encounter the breathtakingly beautiful lake, formed as a result of volcanic explosion more than 4000 years ago. Lake Bunyonyi is praised for her fresh waters, moderate temperatures and beautiful climate. The area around the lake is a mass of flourishing greenery, terraced hills, and well-tended farms.
A safari to Lake Bunyonyi is an excursion to a haven of wonders; the lake has 29 islands dotted across it. Among these islands is Akampene – the infamous punishment island where girls who got pregnant before marriage were abandoned to die, either from hunger or drowning as they tried to swim back to the mainland. Also, besides being bilhazia-free, Lake Bunyonyi has no crocodiles and hippos, a fact that makes it safe for swimming. The safari activities to engage in at Lake Bunyonyi are inexhaustible; boat cruising, canoeing, cycling, nature walks, swimming, birding, kayaking, community visits, fishing, and many more. A day spent at Lake Bunyonyi is worthwhile.
