Tour Details

Lake Bunyonyi translated ‘place of many little birds’ in the native dialect is situated in the South-western region between the districts of Kisoro and Kabale, close to Uganda’s border with Rwanda. The lake is believed to be one of the deepest lakes in Africa. Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s celebrated tourist attractions; it appears on the 5000 shilling note with the title ‘Lake Bunyonyi and terraces’. The one day lake safari is your chance to encounter the breathtakingly beautiful lake, formed as a result of volcanic explosion more than 4000 years ago. Lake Bunyonyi is praised for her fresh waters, moderate temperatures and beautiful climate. The area around the lake is a mass of flourishing greenery, terraced hills, and well-tended farms.

A safari to Lake Bunyonyi is an excursion to a haven of wonders; the lake has 29 islands dotted across it. Among these islands is Akampene – the infamous punishment island where girls who got pregnant before marriage were abandoned to die, either from hunger or drowning as they tried to swim back to the mainland. Also, besides being bilhazia-free, Lake Bunyonyi has no crocodiles and hippos, a fact that makes it safe for swimming. The safari activities to engage in at Lake Bunyonyi are inexhaustible; boat cruising, canoeing, cycling, nature walks, swimming, birding, kayaking, community visits, fishing, and many more. A day spent at Lake Bunyonyi is worthwhile.

Itinerary

Day 1Travel to Lake Bunyonyi

Your one day Lake Bunyonyi tour begins at 6:00 am when a guide picks you from your choice location in Kampala. After a briefing on how your day will be spent, you immediately embark on your journey to beat the city traffic. Driving towards the south-western Uganda, you will make your first stop at the equator in Kayabwe. You will take photographs at the monuments, visit the souvenir shops in the area and even do some intriguing experiments to prove that the imaginary line dividing the earth into two halves lies in that place. Your next stop will be in Kabale town where you will have your lunch.

Once you reach Lake Bunyonyi, you will embark on a boat cruise to tour the islands that are spread across the lake. You will be amazed by the beauty of Lake Bunyonyi and its features. For the avid birder, a boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi is a time to spot a variety of bird species including those that are endemic to the region. Some of the birds you will see include; the white-tailed blue monad, herons, grey-crowned crane, egrets, levillant cuckoo, cardinal woodpecker and the slender-billed baglafetch. Lake Bunyonyi and its surrounding is a habitat to over 200 bird species.

In the late afternoon, you will embark on a community tour to encounter the pygmy Batwa and the Abaheesi – a black smith community that have inhabited the area for many years. You will learn about their way of life and enjoy a series of performances from them. As the day wanes you can choose to go fishing, canoeing or cycling before embarking on your journey back to Kampala. Your guide will drive you to the airport if you have a flight to catch or drop you at a location of your choice in Kampala. This will mark the end of your 1 day Lake Bunyonyi tour.
